A New Code of Practice for Structural Use of Glass has formally issued by Buildings Department on 9 Feb. 2018 together with a Circulation Letter highlighting the special features and date of effective implementation with a grace period of 12-month for the captioned.

The Code provides guidance on design, construction, testing and quality assurance of structural glass works.  It adopts the limit state design approach, which should provide a more rigorous and economical design than conventional method.

Due to rapidly growing interest among contemporary architects in the use of curtain wall systems as building enclosure.  The seminar takes a performance-based approach to explore in-depth the processes of design and construction of building envelopes, with an emphasis on the background and technologies behind structural glass work and curtain wall systems.  Aesthetic and technical issues encompassed by glass wall and curtain wall design in current local practice will be addressed.

As curtain wall designs continue to evolve and become more complex and unique, but the performance requirements generally remain consistent.  Apart from the three basic performance requirements in curtain wall system –  structural adequacy, air infiltration and water tightness, the designers should also pay attention to the use of fire stop & smoke seal materials and their installation method.  In second part of this seminar, related clauses in CoP Fire Safety in Buildings 2011 will be discussed.
